The Latest Addition

You know how some people fall down and come home with yarn? I fell down in a truck stop parking lot in Iowa and came home with a dog. Ok, so I was meeting the foster Dad there. But it sounded vaguely mysterious to say it the other way though.

Her current name is Violet. Think she has some Bassett in her?

Yep, she barely comes up to my 20qt dyepot. She can walk under Simba.

How difficult/traumatizing is it to change a dog's name? Anybody know? More later, I have to be to work at 8:00. (Which gives me a minute to log into my work computer. I love working from home!)

What a cutie!! I don't think it would traumatize her to get a new name.... We renamed our rescue dog when we got her and she was already about a year old. :-)

Lovely sweet face, particularly the short little brown eyebrows.

Definitely a basset shape, but I like her face and coloring much, much better. She looks like a real sweetie!

We renamed our guy - he was ~ 18 mos when we got him. They'd been calling him Pierre at the shelter, but it didn't take him too long to accept Toby instead ;)

As someone who always winds up calling their pets by a different name than the one I originally gave them (Baby instead of Lilly, Barley Bear instead of Scarlet, etc.), I can attest to the face that they adjust just fine. As long as they're with their mommy and are well fed, warm and loved, they're pretty happy campers. Violet looks to be a very sweet, very pretty baby. Congratulations on the new addition to your family.

We have 3 rescue cats--and had no idea of their names before we got them. I really believe that it is all in the tone of how you talk to them that matters. Two of the cats responded to their new names right away, the other 3 years later is happier being called for breakfast. It is all about the love!

how adorable her stance is and I love her coloring!

So cute! She looks like a little black and tan dog in a blue merle bodysuit.

My guess is that she'd accept a new name more quickly if it had the same vowel sound, but it is just a guess.

She is DARLING. (And we always change our pets' names... They don't mind, just don't call them late for supper.)

I don't think it traumatizes them at all. Although I do love the name Violet. It seems very proper and she looks like she might have a little diva in her. Basset, Dashound, and something with the blue merl coat I'd say. What a fun mix!

I do find more success with changing names if there are nice hard sounds in the name. They seem to pick it up quicker. Toby was a good example. The T and B make that name easily recognizable. We had one dog that came to us as Angel and we changed it to Garbo. She got it right away.

Be sure to give us status pics as she gets used to her new home! How old is she?

I wouldn't hesitate to rename her. I adopted a stray from a shelter who had been renamed Charisma. I knew I didn't like that name, but it took me until I realized she was responding to 'animal' to settle on a new one. =) She is none the worse for wear, and certainly never appeared distressed that I wasn't calling her by any of her previous names because she was fed, warm, and loved. =)

Oh!! What a sweetie! My dogs don't seem to notice what I call them - they respond the best to the crinkle of plastic wrapped goodies from the fridge, so I've settled with calling them Annie and Lucy. I am a firm believer in the power of pets to help you through any situation so I am elated that she's with you! (;

Such a sweet face! I think as long as you're giving her love and a wonderful home, that she's not going to mind a name change in the least.

We had a beagle named Duggan who lived with us for about six years. One day he wandered off, and we were sure he'd met with a terrible end what with all the coyotes and such. Much to our surprise, almost a whole year later, he turned up at our vet's office ... his new owner had brought him in for a checkup and the vet found the chip that traced him to us! (It is a fabulous tale, he actually was adopted by a senior lady who was looking for a beagle pup to keep her company, and he spent his days being loved by her until she passed on ... then went to live with the old lady's caregiver).

The point of all this (yes, there is one, sorry) is that they called him Obama (something to do with him being brown, I never did quite figure that out!) and when his new people discovered his old name and called him Duggan, he didn't even react. However, when we went to visit him at his new home (he was so happy there, we arranged an 'open adoption'), he answered me right away when I called him Duggan, although he ignored his new people when they called that name.

They figure it out. :) She's really cute, I am glad she has a home with you! The little turned-out toes just make me giggle.

She's beautiful. :-) It looks like she has the markings of a Blue Tick Hound and the body of a Dachshund.
She looks like a Violet, but if you want to change it, try to find a name that you like, but also one that fits her personality.
We have a cat who came to us as Mischief, but it didn't fit her personality. She ended up becoming Zoey because it means full of life. Animals adjust to name changes much better than people do.

(sorry for the delete - signed in w/ wrong name)

Hi. She's gorgeous. We re-named our rescue dog. She was called Nipper when we got her (!) at 5 years old. We called her Millie (the only name I could find to rhyme with Nipper was Ripper...). She soon realised her name and is lovely and happy.

She looks like she is turning her toes out like a ballet dancer and reminds me of Darcey Bussell.

She is lovely. How old is she?

If you let her get hungry enough, she'll answer to just about anything. Just kidding.
